Tilted World by Tom Franklin & Beth Ann Fennelly

The authors have created memorable characters in Ted Ingersoll and  Ham Johnson, two revenuers working for Hoover to catch bootleggers along the Mississippi during prohibition in 1927. Dixie Clay, a young newlywed becomes a bootlegger for her philandering husband and has a reputation for making the best whiskey in the region.  Along comes an orphan who needs a home and record rainfall that won't stop. Levees are undermined and priorities change. Very good, I recommend this book!

Maid's Version by Daniel Woodrell

This is the story of a small town dance hall fire that kills 28 people. Told by the maid's grandson it retells the story of Alma the maid, her life spent in poverty and servitude and the tangled intertwining lives of families in this town  and events leading up to the fire. Desperation, love, lust, madness, survival, intrigue, a well written book and a quick read!
