Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
This story takes place in a village on the Thames in the late 1800's. The Swan, the village tavern that is known for storytelling, has quite a story to tell after a man stumbles in one rainy night after pulling a child from the river. Who is this child, where did she come from and who does she belong to? Three families have hope that the child belongs to them. Others are drawn to her and all have their own and differing reasons and stories to tell. Many have a feeling that, "something is about to happen". With vivid village characters and a solid sense of place this is a very good story indeed!
